EMBRACING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE WITH VAIDER GROUP

Sustainable development is a cornerstone of the Vaider Group’s strategic vision. We are dedicated to producing glass packaging of the highest quality and purity. This strategic decision paves the way for us to consistently plan and achieve sustainable goals that fundamentally concern the environment and broader society.

Innovations in the packaging industry

Packaging glass complies with the strict requirements of the food, cosmetics, and other industries. For some time, we have emphasised the thinner thickness of the walls and bottom since lower product weight reduces transport costs and improves carbon footprint. Lightweight glass bottles are an innovation in the packaging industry that aims to reduce environmental impact and production costs.

We also strive to increase the service life of products using innovative decoration technologies. The use of décor increases the value of the primary product, which, at the same time, influences individuals’ perception of the product and, consequently, their purchase decision.

Automation and digitalisation
of working process

Glass production presents several challenges that need careful management, and we are continually seeking better solutions with our partners. Traditional glass production, which is energy-intensive and demands challenging working conditions, is being strategically updated through ambitious measures aimed at automation, digitalisation, improved working conditions, and reduced environmental impact at both production sites in Slovenia and Serbia.

Energy efficiency
and renewable energy sources

Such daring development steps require dynamic and strategically oriented investment cycles. We are improving our energy efficiency and safety long-term and investing in renewable energy sources. With innovative solutions, we are enhancing waste heat utilisation, substituting fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives, improving melting furnaces’ efficiency, and introducing innovations that benefit both people and the environment.

Sustainable glass

Sustainable Glass is glass that has a significantly lower carbon footprint. It is defined by its production process, which harmoniously blends traditional glassmaking expertise with advanced, eco-friendly technologies. This innovative approach dramatically reduces the environmental impact of glass production by minimising energy consumption, utilising high percentages of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, and leveraging clean energy sources such as hydrogen and electricity.

Sustainable Glass is not just a product but a commitment to the future. It embodies our dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving natural resources, and leading the industry toward more sustainable, transparent, and conscientious practices.

Key facts
  • Production of premium glass bottles using hydrogen or electricity as the primary energy source.
  • It can be combined with a lightweight design or redesign of your bottle.
  • Up to 30% reduction in direct CO2 emissions.
  • Up to 60% hydrogen in the fuel mixture.
  • Up to 40% electricity usage.
  • CO2 emissions verified with the GHG protocol.
Hydrogen technology

Hydrogen is at the forefront of our sustainability initiatives. When combusted as a clean fuel, it produces only water vapour, rendering it an excellent alternative to fossil fuels. In 2023, we integrated hydrogen into our glass production processes, achieving over 60% hydrogen usage and reducing our direct CO2 emissions by more than 30%.
Inovative approach has enabled us to uphold our high-quality standards while significantly reducing our carbon footprint.

Hybrid regenerative furnace
in Hrastnik, Slovenia

Our hybrid regenerative furnace combines the efficiency of all-electric furnaces with the flexibility of conventional fossil-fuel furnaces. Raising the electrical melting share to over 40% has diminished natural gas consumption and CO2 emissions by more than 50%.
This pioneering technology, supported by the Innovation Fund, enables us to adapt to changing energy markets and enhance the sustainability of our production processes.

Resource efficient
with recycled materials

We are dedicated to environmental sustainability through the strategic use of recycled materials. By incorporating up to 40% post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass, we reduce our direct CO2 emissions by approximately 35% and cradle-to-gate emissions by 27%. This conserves natural resources and minimises waste, fostering a circular economy.

Lightweighting
for efficiency and performance

Our lightweight initiative redesigns bottles to make them lighter, reducing energy consumption, water usage, and CO2 emissions. This transformative approach enhances operational efficiency and product performance while preserving brand style. Lighter bottles require less raw material, decreasing transportation costs and resource strain, ultimately benefiting our clients.

Internal responsibility

One of Vaider Group’s business operations foundations is placing employees at the centre. Our highest priorities are workplace safety and health, enhancing working conditions, and developing employees’ skills. Only healthy, satisfied, trained, and motivated employees can contribute to Vaider Group’s growth. They also pay great attention to coexisting harmoniously with the local environments in which they operate.

The Vaider Group takes internal communication seriously. Employees are not mere blank slates on which they can imprint the company’s views and beliefs—this is also reflected in the group’s diverse communication network.

External communications

The Vaider Group has enhanced communications at both global and local levels, allowing it to serve as a catalyst for process and sustainable innovations within the glass-making industry.

They exemplify that the shift to sustainable operations is achievable even in energy-intensive areas, and the outcomes of their efforts in carbon balances have been eagerly shared with others.
