CHRISTOPHE AMIGORENA, MELIFERA OWNER
Melifera is more than a gin. At the heart of the brand is the immortelle flower, known for its ability to retain its shape and colour long after being picked.
The flower has inspired legends for centuries and was once believed to have the power to restore health and youth. According to one legend, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and later England, wore a crown woven from immortelle flowers at her wedding to Henry II, hoping to bring wealth and fertility to their union.
For Melifera’s founder, Christophe Amigorena, the immortelle was a natural choice as the centrepiece of the brand. Melifera is described as the first organic gin distilled with these flowers, and their significance is reflected in the bottle’s design.
When Christophe Amigorena began developing the packaging for Melifera Gin, he wanted the bottle to have an aged appearance, with a robust shape, light green glass and a delicate crown of immortelle flowers just below the shoulders.
Finding the right glass manufacturer was essential. The project required high-quality glass, a relatively short development process and the technical expertise to reproduce the intricate floral design.
Amigorena chose Vaider Group (formerly HRASTNIK1860) following an assessment of the project’s technical demands, the company’s responsiveness and its production capabilities.
The main challenge was to give the bottle an aged appearance while making the flowers clearly visible around its circumference. The embossed floral crown required particular attention. Each flower, leaf and twig had to remain distinguishable, with the relief carefully positioned to align with the digital inkjet decoration.
At first glance, the Melifera bottle has a simple, almost austere shape. Look more closely, however, and the details become apparent, particularly the intricate embossing, which is barely perceptible to the touch.
The relief takes the form of a woven wreath of immortelle flowers, encircling the bottle like a crown. Combined with the printed decoration, it gives the glass its slightly aged, rustic appearance.
Illustrations of flowers and twigs were used to develop the wreath, with careful attention to the shapes and proportions of each element. Although the arrangement appears natural and almost random, its production required precise mould design.
One of the most demanding aspects was ensuring that the delicate transitions between the flowers, leaves and branches would not interfere with the opening of the mould. The relief had to retain its definition while meeting the technical requirements of glass production.
The finished bottle preserves the original design concept, with its light green glass, subtle floral embossing and printed details working together to reflect the story behind Melifera Gin.
