La Distillerie Générale brings together generations of expertise from some of the best-known names in the spirits industry, combining the heritage of established houses with the creativity of small-batch production.
Created within the Pernod Ricard portfolio, the exclusive collection includes cognac, gentian, wormwood spirits, vodka, gin, Armagnac, rum, mezcal, whisky and tequila.
Each spirit has its own connection to the group’s expertise. The collection was developed through the knowledge and experience of professionals working with Pernod Ricard’s brands, giving individual expressions their own story and character.
The gin, for example, was created by Desmond Payne, Master Distiller at Beefeater. His recipe offered a fresh interpretation of the traditional London Dry style.
For the whisky selection, Chivas Master Blender Sandy Hyslop personally selected six whiskies from the company’s private reserves: five single malts and one single grain. Together, they highlight the different characteristics and styles found within Scotch whisky.
With such a diverse selection of spirits, the packaging needed to create a recognisable identity for the entire collection without losing the individuality of each expression.
The visual identity of La Distillerie Générale was developed by designers Paul-Bertrand Mathieu and Louis-Marie de Castelbajac.
Their approach combined the refined proportions of an 18th-century carafe with contemporary graphic elements, bringing a sense of tradition and individuality to the collection.
Each spirit is presented in a bespoke glass bottle, available in 350 ml and 500 ml formats. The consistent bottle shape creates a visual connection across the range, while the decoration gives every expression its own identity.
Colour plays an important role in distinguishing the different spirits. Rather than relying on conventional paper labels, the designers chose fabric labels featuring colourful, embroidered illustrations.
The labels were produced by workshops also known for making Royal Navy insignia, bringing specialist textile craftsmanship into the world of spirits packaging.
Their distinctive imagery combines traditional embroidery with a more playful visual language, creating an unexpected contrast with the classic glass bottle.
Each bottle is also accompanied by a carefully designed information sheet detailing the spirit and its origin, allowing the story behind each expression to become part of the overall presentation.
The glass bottle was manufactured by Vaider Group (formerly HRASTNIK1860) using extra-white flint glass.
The material was selected to complement the collection’s refined appearance, providing exceptional clarity and allowing the colour of each spirit to remain visible.
Its clean, transparent finish also creates a suitable background for the embroidered fabric labels, ensuring that their colours and intricate details stand out.
The bottle’s carafe-inspired silhouette brings consistency to the collection, while the different labels and individual spirit characteristics give each product its own presence.
By combining a shared glass design with carefully considered decoration, La Distillerie Générale demonstrates how a diverse spirits portfolio can maintain a unified visual identity without making every bottle look the same.
The result brings together the expertise of Pernod Ricard’s spirits specialists, the creative direction of Mathieu and de Castelbajac, specialist textile craftsmanship and glass manufacturing by Vaider Group.
